For many drivers, the annual MOT test can feel daunting. However, understanding what the test covers and how to prepare your vehicle can significantly reduce stress — and the likelihood of a failure.
What Does the MOT Test Check?
The MOT (Ministry of Transport) test assesses a comprehensive range of safety and emissions-related components, including: lights and signals, steering and suspension, brakes, tyres and wheels, seatbelts, windscreen and wipers, exhaust emissions, and visible corrosion on the vehicle structure.
Common Reasons for MOT Failure
The most frequent causes of MOT failures are surprisingly straightforward: blown bulbs, worn wiper blades, cracked windscreens, bald or under-inflated tyres, and brake issues. Many of these can be addressed inexpensively before the test.
Simple Pre-MOT Checks You Can Do Yourself
Walk around your vehicle and check that all lights are working — headlights, brake lights, indicators, and number plate lights. Check your tyre tread depth (the legal minimum is 1.6mm) and ensure tyres are inflated to the correct pressure. Top up your screen wash and test your windscreen wipers.
