Electric vehicle ownership is growing rapidly across the UK, and with it comes a new set of questions about charging, maintenance, and long-term care. At Brookes Auto Repair, we work on an increasing number of electric and hybrid vehicles and are well placed to help new EV owners understand what their vehicles need.
Home Charging: The Basics
The vast majority of EV charging takes place at home overnight. A dedicated home wallbox charger — typically a 7kW unit — will charge most EVs from empty to full overnight. Using a standard three-pin plug is possible but significantly slower and places sustained load on domestic wiring not designed for this purpose. A properly installed wallbox is a worthwhile investment for any EV owner.
Battery Care and Longevity
EV batteries last longest when kept between approximately 20 and 80 percent charge for everyday use. Regular charging to 100 percent accelerates long-term degradation — save full charges for long journeys. Similarly, frequent use of rapid DC charging generates heat that can contribute to battery degradation over time. Use rapid chargers when needed but rely on slower AC charging for routine top-ups.
What Maintenance Does an EV Still Need?
Electric vehicles require less maintenance than combustion-engined cars — no oil changes, no spark plugs, no exhaust system. However, they are not maintenance-free. Tyres, brakes, coolant (used in battery thermal management), cabin air filters, and wiper blades all still require attention. The 12V auxiliary battery — separate from the main traction battery — also needs periodic inspection and replacement.
Regenerative Braking and Brake Maintenance
Most EVs use regenerative braking to recover energy during deceleration, which significantly reduces wear on conventional brake components. However, this can cause brake callipers to seize if the physical brakes are rarely used. Regular inspection of the braking system is important even in vehicles where regenerative braking handles most deceleration.
