A vehicle health check is a structured inspection of a car’s key systems, carried out either as part of a service or as a standalone appointment. At Brookes Auto Repair, our health check follows a systematic process designed to identify issues at every level — from safety-critical problems that need immediate attention to developing concerns that can be monitored and addressed at the next service. Here is a detailed look at what we inspect and why each area matters.
Tyres and Wheels
All four tyres are checked for tread depth using a calibrated gauge — not a visual estimate. The legal minimum is 1.6mm, but we advise replacement at 3mm as wet-weather stopping distances deteriorate significantly below this point. Sidewall condition is checked for bulges, cuts, and cracking. Tyre pressure is checked and adjusted if required. Wheels are inspected for damage from kerbs and potholes that could affect balance or structural integrity.
Braking System
Brake pad thickness is measured on all four corners and compared against the manufacturer’s minimum specification. Disc condition is assessed for scoring, corrosion, and thickness variation. Brake fluid is tested for moisture content — a simple test that takes seconds but reveals whether the fluid has degraded to the point where replacement is required. Handbrake operation is checked for correct adjustment and cable condition.
Under Bonnet
Engine oil level and condition are checked on the dipstick. Coolant level and concentration are verified. Power steering fluid, brake fluid reservoir level, and screen wash are all inspected. The battery is visually inspected for corrosion on terminals and any signs of case damage. Drive belts are checked for cracking, glazing, and tension.
Underside and Suspension
With the vehicle raised on the ramp, the underside is inspected for corrosion, fluid leaks, and damage. Exhaust system integrity is checked along its full length. Suspension components — shock absorbers, springs, control arm bushes, and ball joints — are inspected for wear and play. Steering components including track rod ends and steering rack gaiters are checked for condition and leaks.
At the end of the inspection, you receive a written report detailing findings in three categories: immediate attention required, monitor and review, and satisfactory. Book your health check at brookesautorepair.com.
