Hybrid Vehicle Maintenance: What Is Different and What to Expect

Hybrid vehicles are no longer a niche choice — they represent a significant and growing proportion of vehicles on UK roads. Yet many drivers who have made the switch from conventional petrol or diesel cars remain uncertain about what hybrid ownership means for servicing and maintenance. At Brookes Auto Repair, we work on hybrid vehicles regularly and want to help owners understand what their specific vehicles need.

What Makes a Hybrid Different?

A full hybrid vehicle combines a conventional combustion engine with one or more electric motors and a high-voltage battery pack. A mild hybrid uses a smaller electric system to assist the combustion engine without enabling full electric-only driving. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) adds a larger battery that can be charged from an external source, enabling meaningful zero-emission range. Each type has slightly different maintenance implications.

What Stays the Same

Hybrid vehicles still require regular engine oil and filter changes, coolant maintenance, brake fluid replacement, air filter and spark plug service intervals, tyre inspection and replacement, and wiper blade attention. If your hybrid has a combustion engine — and most do — it still needs all the conventional servicing that a non-hybrid car requires.

What Is Different

The high-voltage battery system in a hybrid requires its own coolant circuit, which should be checked and serviced at the manufacturer’s recommended intervals. The 12V auxiliary battery — a separate unit from the main traction battery — is still present and still needs attention. Brake system maintenance is important even in hybrids that use regenerative braking extensively, as the conventional brake components can seize through underuse.

High-Voltage Safety

Working on the high-voltage systems of a hybrid vehicle requires specific training, equipment, and safety protocols. Any work involving the high-voltage battery, inverter, or drive motor should only be carried out by technicians with appropriate hybrid/EV qualifications. At Brookes Auto Repair, our team is trained and equipped to work safely on hybrid vehicles.
