1. Warm Air Instead of Cold

The most common complaint — if the air coming through the vents isn’t as cold as it used to be, it’s usually down to low refrigerant or a developing leak somewhere in the system.

2. Musty or Unpleasant Smells

A damp, musty smell when the aircon kicks in is often caused by mould or bacteria building up in the evaporator or ventilation system, particularly if the car’s been sat unused for a while.

3. Unusual Noises

Squealing, clicking or rattling noises when you switch the aircon on can point to a failing compressor or a loose component — best not to ignore these, as they tend to get worse over time.

4. Weak Airflow

If the air is cold but barely reaching you, the issue is more likely with the blower motor or a blocked cabin filter rather than the refrigerant itself.

5. Slow to Cool Down

A system that takes noticeably longer than it used to reach a comfortable temperature is often an early sign of refrigerant loss — worth checking before it gets worse.
