A car that pulls to one side when driving straight — requiring constant steering correction to maintain course — is not just irritating. It is a sign that something is wrong, and leaving it unaddressed will accelerate tyre wear, increase fuel consumption, and in some cases create a safety risk. At Brookes Auto Repair, this is one of the most common issues we diagnose, and in the majority of cases it is straightforward to resolve.
Tyre Pressure Difference
The simplest and most common cause of pulling is a difference in tyre pressure between the left and right tyres on the same axle. An under-inflated tyre creates more rolling resistance than a correctly inflated one, causing the car to pull toward the low-pressure side. Before suspecting anything more complex, check all four tyre pressures and correct any discrepancy.
Wheel Alignment
If tyre pressures are correct and the car still pulls, incorrect wheel alignment is the most likely cause. Alignment refers to the angles at which the wheels are set relative to each other and to the vehicle. If one wheel is pointing in a slightly different direction to its counterpart on the other side, the car will naturally track toward the side with the greater deviation. Alignment can be knocked off by hitting a pothole, striking a kerb, or simply through the gradual wear of steering components.
Brake Drag
A seized brake calliper that is applying partial pressure to one side of the vehicle will cause it to pull toward the affected wheel when braking — and in severe cases, even when driving normally. This is also accompanied by localised heat from the affected corner and often a burning smell. Brake drag should be investigated promptly.
Worn Steering or Suspension Components
Worn track rod ends, control arm bushes, or wheel bearings can all cause directional instability. In these cases, the pull may be accompanied by other symptoms — unusual tyre wear, noise over bumps, or vagueness in the steering response.
